Gilas almost intact as Thoss, LA given all clear for Tokyo trip

By Richard Dy

THE Smart Gilas 2.0 team that won the Jones Cup in Taipei will be almost intact when the country competes in the Fiba Asia Cup in two weeks time, thanks to dramatic turn of events on Friday that saw Alaska's Sonny Thoss and new Ginebra guard LA Tenorio get the green light from their respective teams.
National coach Chot Reyes made the announcement after getting clearance from Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas head Manny Pangilinan, delighted over the news that a team that defied the odds last week in Taipei will now get a chance to slug it out with Asia's big boys from September 14-22 in Tokyo.
"It's time for a good meal with the family and a nice bottle of red wine," Reyes told Spin.ph at the end of a hectic day that saw him grappling with different combinations as he faced the prospect of losing either Thoss or Tenorio -- or both -- as the deadline for the submission of lineups approached.
In the end, the lone change he had to make was put in Talk 'N Text's JD Dillinger in place of Sol Mercado, but only because the spitfire guard won't be eligible to play for the Philippines under Fiba's strict rules even if he had suited up for the original Gilas team under Rajko Toroman in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.
Alaska's Mac Baracael and amateur Garvo Lanete, who were part of the 14-man Jones Cup team, also did not make the roster although Lanete will still join the trip as a reserve.
Other than that, everything fell into place for Reyes and his staff as he announced that Gabe Norwood, Larry Fonacier, Ranidel de Ocampo, Jeff Chan, Jay-R Reyes, Enrico Villanueva, Gary David, naturalized player Marcus Douthit, Matt Rosser, Thoss and Tenorio will be back for the Tokyo tournament.
Tenorio made the team on a day when the four-team trade that sent him to Ginebra was finally completed. PBA Commissioner Chito Salud later revealed that he has received word from SMC officials that they will allow their prized acquisition to stay on with Gilas.
SMC sports consultant Noli Eala said that contrary to popular belief, the conglomerate was willing to lend players from its three PBA ballclubs to the national team, so long as a formal request is made.
Reyes, however, said the offer came too late in the day.
"Too late," Reyes said in a message to Spin.ph.
Thoss was the final piece of the puzzle to fall into place, his stint very much in doubt until he had a talk with Alaska team owner Wilfred Uytengsu who later softened his stand and gave him the go-signal.
Alaska coach Luigi Trillo said Uytengsu gave the 6-7 Thoss the green light on the condition that the player delay his departure for Tokyo by a day and promise that he will immediately fly back to Manila if Smart Gilas 2.0 is knocked out of contention.
“Even if Gilas still has a few games left on its schedule, once they get eliminated, Sonny will have to leave for Manila earlier,” Trillo told Spin.ph at the end of the Aces' practice at the Reyes gym.
Uytengsu took into consideration the fact that Thoss is the longest-tenured player in the Aces' lineup as he softened his stand on not allowing the team's players to join Gilas in the Tokyo tournament, Trillo said.
“Boss Fred took into consideration Sonny being the longest tenured player in the team right now,” Trillo said. "Boss Fred heard what Sonny said during their talk and after weighing things carefully, he has allowed Sonny to join the Gilas team."
Thoss, who belonged to the 2004 rookie class that included current San Mig Coffee (formerly B-Meg) superstar James Yap and Talk ‘N Text’s Richard Alvarez (the top overall pick), was understandably elated by Uytengsu’s decision.
“Who wouldn’t want to represent the country? I mean, playing for the national team gives me an opportunity to grow further as an athlete. It’s basically going up to the next level. The rest is just a bonus, like getting to know other culture whenever we travel,” Thoss said.
The Fil-German Alaska center said he understood Uytengsu’s desire to keep the team intact during the offseason since the Aces didn’t do well the past season.
“I know boss Fred is concerned with my health because I will have to practice with the team immediately once we’re done playing in the Asia Cup. But I also explained that this is an opportunity for me to play for the country. And he understood my point,” added Thoss, whose German father and Filipina mother are now based in Cebu City.

Talk 'N Text guard Jared Dillinger is the lone addition to the team, taking the place of Sol Mercado while big man Sonny Thoss was given the all clear by Alaska. Jerome Ascano

Day to remember in PBA

By Fidel R. Mangonon III

August 31, 2012 -- This day will be remembered for a lot of things.
One should be about the trade that sent LA Tenorio to Barangay Ginebra, JVee Casio and Dondon Hontiveros to Alaska, Willie Miller to Global Port, Rico Villanueva to Barako Bull and Wesley Gonzales and Hans Thiele to Petron Blaze.
The day also saw Smart Gilas Pilipinas 2.0 submitting a virtually intact lineup for the coming 4th FIBA Asia Cup from September 14 to 22 in Tokyo, Japan, from its title-winning roster in the recent 34th Jones Cup in Taiwan.
Or it can be remembered for the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the western seaboard of the country.
But for almost half of the players in the Philippine Basketball Association this past season, or 60 to be exact, it is the day their playing contracts expired with their mother teams and a day which most of them will start facing an uncertain future.
Ten other players had their contracts expiring before that day.
For sure some of these players have already renewed their contracts like Barangay Ginebra’s Rob Labagala and Nic Belasco, who has signed with Alaska. But I still have no word on the others although for sure the marquee players aren’t going to have any problems.
The list of players whose contracts expired on Friday includes six MVP winners – Barangay Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand and Eric Menk, Global Port’s Willie Miller, Meralco’s Asi Taulava and Talk ‘N Text’s Kelly Williams.
Here’s the complete list of players whose contracts expired August 31, 2012:
Alaska:  Gabby Espinas, Paolo Bugia, Brandon Cablay, Julius Pasculado, Ariel Mepana, Ervin Sotto, Nino Gelig
Air21:  Mark Isip, Bitoy Omolon, Pong Escobal, Khazim Mirza, Brian Faundo

PRESS RELEASE OF ALASKA ACES: Tenorio/Casio | Gonzalez Thiele/Hontiveros

PRESS RELEASE OF ALASKA ACES:

Alaska Trades Tenorio for CasioHontiveros to Aces for Gonzalez and Thiele

The Alaska Aces surprised many by trading point guard LA Tenorio for JV Casio and a second round pick in 2013. Tenorio fresh from his heroics at the Jones Cup will be replaced by All Star vote leader JV Casio who will have some big shoes to fill. Contrary to earlier reports, the trade was not sparked by Tenorio's participation in the Jones Cup. Tenorio together with Thoss and Baracael were given the green light to participate and support the National team. "We have been approached by many teams for LA and they have all been denied because we felt LA was an integral part of our team." Aces GM Joaqui Trillo stated. "However, looking forward, we also see the promise of JV and feel he can bring a lot to Alaska. So we are taking a leap of faith but a calculated one." Trillo added.

Tenorio was the MVP at the recently concluded Jones Cup in Taiwan where the Philippine Team won the gold medal. Earlier it had been reported that Alaska management was not keen to lend its players to the national pool considering the sacrifices it has made supporting past national teams and given the Aces poor showing last season. Alaska was the only team to contribute three players to the Nationals which included Sonny Thoss and Mac Baracael in addition to Tenorio. "We lent three of our key players to the Jones Cup tournament because we knew it was a big tournament and we are proud of the entire team's accomplishment. But it’s also time that other companies step up their support of the national team as we have been doing so since the mid-90s." team owner Wilfred Steven Uytengsu mentioned. "We believe the FIBA Asia Cup, (formerly known as the Stankovic Cup) in Japan later this month to be of less significance and do not see the need to contribute players. Nevertheless, we are making Sonny available for the FIBA Asia Cup on a limited basis. We need to focus on our campaign for the upcoming season given our sub-par performance last season and we need our players to be focused and healthy. I talked to the team about this right after our last game in June and the players committed to making the sacrifices necessary to regain competitiveness. We want a team of players who will live by this commitment. We wish LA well and thank him for his leadership while he was wearing an Aces jersey. He will be successful wherever he goes. At the same time, we believe JV can bring a lot of dynamism to our team and has the youth to have a long career with Alaska." Uytengsu added.

Also traded were Wesley Gonzalez and Hans Thiele for veteran Dondon Hontiveros. Trillo mentioned, "Although approaching the twilight of his career, we believe Dondon still has a great game and will open things up for us with his great shooting and occasional penetration. Plus he is a good defender and has strong leadership skills."

The Aces have opted to reinforce their 2012-2013 season line up by adding a couple of veteran Alaska balik-players in Nic Belasco and Eddie Laure who are already familiar with Alaska's philosophy and system. Together with the rest of the core team that includes Sonny Thoss, Cyrus Baguio, Tony de la Cruz, Brandon Cablay, Mac Baracael, Paolo Bugia, Nino Gelig, Bonbon Custodio, Gabby Espinas, Sam Eman, RJ Jazul and rookies Calvin Abueva and Raffy Reyes, Alaska expects to regain its winning form this season.

Alaska nabs Casio, Hontiveros, Ginebra gets Tenorio, GlobalPort gets Miller in monster 5-team deal

The PBA on Friday approved a rigodon of players involving five teams and six players that promises to shake things up in the league.
In the deal, Alaska receives JVee Casio from GlobalPort, Dondon Hontiveros from Petron, and Ginebra’s second round pick.
Barako Bull receives Enrico Villanueva from Ginebra, while GlobalPort will end up with Willie Miller and a first round draft pick next from the Ginebra.
Petron will end up with Wesley Gonzales and Hans Thiele from Alaska, while Ginebra will nab LA Tenorio.

Too late for SMC players to join SMART-Gilas in Japan, says Chot Reyes

By: Rey Joble, InterAKTV
It’s too late.
That’s how SMART-Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes reacted about reports that San Miguel Corporation is willing to lend players from its PBA teams to the national program for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup in Tokyo, Japan.
No less than Ramon Ang, president of SMC, through executive Noli Eala, reportedly said that the conglomerate is willing to allow its players play for the Philippine team. “They need to send a letter of request,” Eala told InterAKTV.
But Reyes said it would be too late to tap players from SMC for the national team’s campaign in Japan, which begins in two weeks. He previously named six SMC players to the national pool, but only Enrico Villanueva of Ginebra committed to the program. James Yap and Marc Pingris of San Mig Coffee and Alex Cabagnot, Arwind Santos, and Marcio Lassiter failed to submit letters of commitment that would have formalized their entry into the SMART-Gilas fold.
Reyes earlier lobbied to include Pingris, citing the need for SMART-Gilas to beef up its frontline. But after a conversation with the coach, ‘Sakuragi’ begged off as he continues to recover from a neck injury he suffered during the finals of last season’s Governors’ Cup.
Still, SMC’s willingness to lend its players comes as good news for the national team. It would clear the way for the problem-free stint of point guard LA Tenorio, the Most Valuable Player of the 34th William Jones Cup, for SMART-Gilas once his reported trade to Ginebra pushes through.

Approved Trades Mainitinit Pa.

PBA Office of the Commissioner APPROVED TRADES as of August 31, 2012:

 1. BARAKO - GINEBRA trade: a. BARAKO acquired the rights to Enrico Villanueva, b. GINEBRA acquired the rights to Willie Miller;

 2. GINEBRA - GLOBAL PORT trade: a. GINEBRA acquired the rights to JV Casio, b. GLOBAL PORT acquired the rights to Willie Miller plus GINEBRA'S 2014 1st rd pick;

3. ALASKA - GINEBRA trade: a. ALASKA acquired the rights to JV Casio plus GINEBRA'S 2015 2nd rd pick, b. GINEBRA acquired the rights to LA Tenorio;

 4. ALASKA - PETRON trade: a. ALASKA acquired the rights to Dondon Hontiveros, b. PETRON acquired the rights to Wesley Gonzales and Hans Paul Thiele

No ‘Sakuragi’ in Japan: Pingris out of SMART-Gilas lineup for FIBA Asia Cup

Marc Pingris will not be part of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas lineup for the FIBA Asia Cup this September, coach Chot Reyes said on Thursday.
Reyes told InterAKTV in a telephone interview that the San Mig Coffee forward is still on vacation and recuperating from a neck injury suffered during the Governors’ Cup finals.
The coach had coveted the big man’s services despite SMART-Gilas winning the 34th William Jones Cup in Taipei last week. Pingris was expected to provide rebounding and defense at power forward, a glaring weakness for the Philippine team that was forced to play wingman Gabe Norwood at that spot during the tournament.
Reyes earlier said he expects the FIBA Asia Cup, which is slated on September 14 to 22 in Tokyo, Japan, to be tougher than the Jones Cup. Unlike the Jones Cup which featured club teams and national teams, the Japan tilt will only be featuring national sides.
The former Talk ‘N Text coach said that he will release the lineup for SMART-Gilas team that will compete in Japan on Friday.

'Sultan of spit' Bringas hit with ban by own school

by: Reuben Terrado

FAR Eastern University enforcer Arvie Bringas has been handed a one-game ban by his own school and warned of more serious sanctions by the UAAP following the spitting incident that marred the Tamaraws' game against Ateneo on Wednesday.
Bringas was suspended for one game by the FEU athletics department on top of the automatic one-game ban handed down by the league for the disqualifying foul slapped on him after he was caught on camera spitting on Ateneo's Justin Chua during the Eagles' 77-64 victory.
In a two-paragraph statement posted on its website, the school said: the FEU athletics department has imposed an additional one-game ban on Mr. Bringas for his actions."
The league also said Bringas' behavior will be closely watched from hereon and similar incidents in the future will be dealt with more severely.
“Huwag naman sana pero he may or may not be banned if the commissioner feels that it is necessary,” said UAAP secretary-treasurer Junel Baculi, adding that league will be monitoring the FEU center’s behavior in the next few games.
“As of now, one game is enough but we will see his behavior. If ganyan pa rin, baka kailangan na ng severe actions.”
At the same time, the league also handed a one-game suspension on Ateneo back-up center JP Erram for kicking Carl Bryan Cruz after the FEU player taunted him in the second quarter.
Erram’s retaliation was not seen by the referees but was spotted by Commissioner Ato Badolato after a review of the game tape. Cruz was issued a warning.
“Mayroon na [si Erram na] warning before so he is suspended for the next game,” Badolato said.
Ateneo has appealed the suspension before the technical committee.
Baculi said the league has also issued warnings to players who figured in several skirmishes in the bruising contest that saw three players getting ejected and some coaches figuring in a heated exchange of words after the buzzer.
“It’s a warning na next time, there will be more severe actions,” said Baculi.
Among those warned were Ateneo’s Ryan Buenafe and FEU’s Mark Belo, who were both ejected for their involvement in a scuffle in the first quarter.
Ateneo’s Greg Slaughter and FEU’s Roger Pogoy were also warned for separate incidents during the game.
Badolato explained that Buenafe and Belo were not suspended because they have only incurred their first unsportsmanlike foul of the season.
Badolato said that a player is automatically suspended if he incurs two unsportsmanlike fouls even on separate games and a technical foul that was meant to hurt.
“In the case of Belo and Buenafe, they were disqualified not because of a disqualifying foul but because they were called for an unsportsmanlike foul and a technical foul for trash-talking. That was not meant to hurt,” Badolato said.
Badolato said Slaughter was warned due to an elbow to Bringas prior to the spitting incident while Pogoy was caught on video elbowing Juami Tiongson when the Atenean was in front of the FEU bench late in the fourth quarter.

Reyes waits as Thoss meets with Uytengsu

By Richard Dy

THE clock is ticking for Smart Gilas 2.0 as Chot Reyes waits for the result of a meeting between slotman Sonny Thoss and Alaska team owner Wilfred Uytengsu before finalizing his lineup for the Fiba Asia Cup in Tokyo next month in time for the deadline set by organizers.
Thoss' availability will have a big impact on Gilas' lineup for the September 14-22 tournament since the 6-7 slotman is the best option as naturalized player Marcus Douthit's chief back-up -- a role the Alaska star played so well in the national team's successful championship run in the Jones Cup.
"The entire make-up of the team will depend on whether Sonny will be there or not," Reyes told Spin.phon Friday morning. "There are a lot of combinations to consider, pero lahat 'yon magde-depende kung andyan si Sonny because he plays a crucial role in the team."
Thoss has made known his desire to join Gilas in the Tokyo trip but Alaska has put its foot down, insisting that all its players stay home and focus on the team's twice-a-day practices as the Uytengsu franchise attempts to rebound from a disappointing 10-22 (win-loss) campaign last season.
LA Tenorio, another Alaska star who played for the title-winning Jones Cup side, has been packaged in a proposed three-team trade that is left hanging by protracted negotiations between Global Port and Ginebra over another key compotent of the deal, JV Casio.
Alaska insiders said Thoss is set to meet on Friday with Uytengsu, who in no uncertain terms has told the coaching staff that he wants all the players to concentrate on the buildup for the coming season.
Although the stand he is taking may be an unpopular one, Uytengsu feels Alaska has bent backwards a lot of times for the national teams in the past and it is time for other ballclubs "to step up" now that the Aces can't afford to loan their players to the Tokyo-bound team, insiders said.
Reyes said he will finalize his 14-man lineup at the end of the Thoss-Uytengsu meeting. The national coach said he has until the end of business hours on Friday to submit his lineup to organizers.
He expects the core of the Jones Cup team to make the lineup including Tenorio, who has bared his intention to join the trip regardless the result of the trade.
However, insiders said a contract that allows Tenorio to join the national team was only made between the player and Alaska and may not be applicable in the event he is traded to Ginebra.

Eala confident Tenorio deal will be completed

SAN Miguel Corporation director for sports Noli Eala sounded confident the blockbuster three-team deal that would send Alaska's LA Tenorio to Ginebra would be completed on Friday despite kinks in talks involving the Kings and Global Port over another key component of the trade, JV Casio.

"Mamya we'll finalize everything," Eala assured in a message to Spin.ph. "Talagang complicated lang itong deal."

Under the terms of an agreement already approved in principle by Alaska and Ginebra, Tenorio, hero of Smart Gilas' successful championship run in the Jones Cup, will go to Ginebra in exchange for Casio and the Kings' second-round pick in the 2013 draft.

Eala and Alaska officials have also agreed on a separate deal that would send veteran Petron forward Dondon Hontiveros to the Aces in exchange for Wesley Gonzales and Hans Thiele.

However, negotiations between Global Port and Eala on which player Batang Pier will get for Casio have hit a rough patch, with sources saying that owner Mikee Romero wants the Kings to throw more players into the deal aside from the one player whose name has constantly cropped up in talks -- Mike Cortez.

The trade is also subject to the approval of the Commissioner's Office, making it imperative for all teams involved to make the deal as 'fair' as possible.

Aces to send Tenorio to Ginebra in proposed three-team deal

ALASKA Milk point guard LA Tenorio is headed to Ginebra San Miguel under a proposed three-team deal also involving PBA newcomer Global Port that will have JV Casio taking Tenorio's place with the Aces.
The complicated deal has already been approved on Thursday by Alaska, which  is also set to get Ginebra's second-round pick in 2015 as part of the proposed Tenorio-Casio swap.
However, the trade is dependent on another transaction between Ginebra and Global Port over Casio, the top pick overall in last year's rookie draft.
According to sources, Ginebra and Batang Pier officials are deep in negotiations trying to hammer out the deal at posting time.
The trade is also subject to approval of the Commissioner's Office.
As of 4 p.m., PBA media bureau chief Willy Marcial said the league has yet to receive a copy of the trade proposal.
The Tenorio deal has sparked a flurry of activities, with the Aces also sending Tenorio's former Ateneo teammate Wesley Gonzales and Hans Thiele to Petron for Dondon Hontiveros.
No matter what happens to the three-team deal, one thing certain is that Tenorio is headed to a new team, just days after playing the hero's role in Smart Gilas 2.0's conquest of the Jones Cup title.
Tenorio attended the Aces' small man practice at the Reyes gym on Thursday morning, after which he was told by coach Luigi Trillo of the proposed deal.

‘Sakuragi’ in Japan? San Mig Coffee to allow Pingris to join SMART-Gilas — if he wants to

The management of San Mig Coffee (formerly the B-MEG Llamados) will allow star forward Marc Pingris to join the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team — if he wants to do it.
Team executive Rene Pardo told InterAKTV that the squad will not stand in the way of anyone joining the Philippine team, but said the decision rests on the player.
“As long as gusto ng player, then we will allow him to play for SMART-Gilas,” Pardo said in a telephone interview.
SMART-Gilas coach Chot Reyes, who said Pingris could play a key role for the team in the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup slated on September 14 to 22 in Tokyo, seemed thrilled by the idea of the man nicknamed Sakuragi’ joining the team in Japan.
“Game! All he needs is to sign letter of commitment and give it to me before Friday,” Reyes wrote in a text message to InterAKTV.
Pardo, however, voiced some concerns about Pingris’ condition.
“Pingris has not played since the Governors’ Cup championship and during that time, he was used in limited minutes because of his neck injury,” Pardo said. Pingris sustained a stiff neck injury in the finals after a hard foul by Ryan Arana, an ailment that caused him to miss a crucial game.
“I have a feeling na baka maka-disrupt siya sa team chemistry ng SMART-Gilas at hindi niya rin kilala yung mga kalaban niya doon sa Tokyo,” added Pardo, who also expressed surprise by Reyes’ desire to include Pingris in the lineup.
“The team has just won the championship in the Jones Cup, why fix it if ain’t broke?”
A response from Pingris, meanwhile, will have to wait, since he is currently abroad on vacation with his family in Singapore, according to Pardo.

Ginebra sweetens pot in bid to acquire Casio

ACQUIRING Jayvee Casio would help Ginebra resolve another gnawing issue. That is, if Global Port bites the Kings’ latest offer.

A usually reliable Business Insight-Malaya source yesterday claimed Ginebra has spruced up its offer and is now dangling playmaker Mike Cortez and slotman Enrico Villanueva for the heady playmaker.

The proposal, added the insider, was presented to no less than Batang Pier owner Mikee Romero in a meeting last Tuesday but there was still no word whether the latter was amenable.

The Kings earlier offered Cortez and forward Willy Wilson for Casio, but Romero turned it down, purportedly wanting a real big man thrown in on the deal.

“Pursigido talaga ang Ginebra na matuloy ang trade kaya sa halip na si Wilson si Villanueva na ang isinasama,” said the source.

Unloading the California-born Cortez would ease Ginebra’s concerns about their glut of Fil-Am players.

Aside from Cortez, the Kings also boast Fil-Ams in Eric Menk, Rudy Hatfield and Wilson, aside from first round draft picks Chris Ellis and Keith Jensen.

Each team is only allowed five Fil-foreign players in their active roster.

“Malaking question nga iyan dahil hindi pa malaman kung sino ang ilalagay sa active at kung sino ang ibababa sa reserve,” noted the insider.

“Kaya depende lahat ‘yan sa kung ano ang kalalabasan ng proposed trade with Global Port. Worst case scenario, bababa ang isa. ”

Meralco, which tabbed Cliff Hodge and Kelly Nabong in the recent draft, is also beset with the same dilemma as it gears up for the PBA’s 38th season kicking off on Sept. 30.

Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio, however, said choosing who to drop from among Asi Taulava, Chris Ross, Sol Mercado, Chris Timberlake and his two draft picks is only a minor problem.

“We may have to relegate Timberlake,” said Gregorio.

Ronjay Buenafe’s entry helps solve the question for Gregorio since the former can also play the guard spot. Buenafe formally became a Bolt yesterday when Commissioner Chito Salud approved the deal Meralco forged with Rain or Shine last Tuesday.

According to the trade terms, Rain or Shine, in return, got Meralco’s 2014 first round pick.

REYES WANTS PINGRIS ON JAPAN-BOUND TEAM

SMART Gilas 2.0 coach Chot Reyes said James Yap, Arwind Santos, Marcio Lassiter and the other players from San Miguel-owned teams are welcome to rejoin the national team program, although they have t
o go through the selection process like everybody else.

All except one: Marc Pingris.

“Pumunta lang s’ya sa practice, tatanggapin ko na s’ya,” said Reyes of
the San Mig Coffee (formerly B-Meg) power forward. “He’s the one player I need most in the team right now.”

Pingris and San Mig teammate Yap as well as Santos, Lassiter and Alex Cabagnot of Petron were among the players from the three teams under the SMC umbrella who were dropped from Reyes’ original pool after refusing to sign a letter of commitment with the Gilas program.

Only one player from SMC, Ginebra’s Enrico Villanueva, remained in the pool.

That has left Reyes no choice but to fill his 14-man lineup with second- and third-choice players from the pool for the Jones Cup campaign, where Gilas 2.0 beat formidable odds to clinch the country’s fourth title in the Taipei event and first in 14 years.

From the five, Santos and Lassiter have gone on record to say they are eager to rejoin the Gilas pool in separate interviews with Spin.ph.

Reyes has kept the door open for the five SMC players to rejoin the national pool as he and his coaching staff deliberate on the final lineup for the Fiba Asia Cup in Japan. The deadline for the submission of the teams’ 12-man lineups is on Friday.

“They’re all welcome,” Reyes told Spin.ph after a round of golf at Wack Wack in Mandaluyong City. “All they have to do is sign the letter of commitment, show up for practice then we’ll see.

“They’ll be part of the pool. But just like everyone else, they have to earn their spot.”

However, Reyes said Santos, Yap, Cabagnot and Lassiter may find it hard to regain their places in the lineup for the Japan tournament considering most of the pool members who stepped up and filled their spots gave a good account of themselves in the Jones Cup campaign.

“Maraming nag-step up, players like (Larry) Fonacier, LA Tenorio and (Sol) Mercado. Take the case of Sol. Papaano mo isisingit sina Cabagnot at Jayson Castro ngayon e ang ganda ng nilaro ni Sol. Papaano mo sila isisingit ngayon? Sino tatanggalin mo?” Reyes said.

There is also the danger of messing up the team chemistry, Reyes said.

"It's very rare that a hastily assembled team comes together like the team in Taipei," the Gilas coach said. "Paano mo ngayon bubulabugin ang chemistry. Mamaya, maglalagay ka ng ibang players d'yan, magaling nga pero masisira naman ang chemistry ng team."

Reyes said the tough-as-nails Pingris is a different case, only because he was the type of player Gilas needed – and missed – in Taipei.

“When Pingris backed out, his place was supposed to be taken by Japeth (Aguilar) but he, too, begged off. So napunta kay Jay-R Reyes,” he said. “But we can really use a guy like Pingris (in Japan). He’s one player who can guard all positions except center.”

Reyes said he expects to make between three to four changes – “Maximum na ang apat,” he said – to the Jones Cup-winning team when he submits his lineup for the Fiba Asia Cup.

“We’ll sit down and talk about it today and tomorrow, look at the stats, review the performances (in Taipei) then come up with a decision by Thursday night,” Reyes said.

Samsung Pays Apple $1 Billion Sending 30 Trucks Full of 5 Cents Coins

This morning more than 30 trucks filled up with coins of 5 cents arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially,  the security company that protects the facility said it was diverted to the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that  they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.
the funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send him to the creators of the iPhone its billion dollars as they deem best.
Lee Kun-HeeThis dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives in the sense of the method that they need to apply for counting all that money, check if it is complete and try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept to receive that.
Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it.
You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law.
A total of 20 billion coins, deliver hope to finish this week.
Let’s see how Apple will respond to this
