Tim Cone ‘honored’ to be coaching against fellow Grand Slam winner Norman Black again

When San Mig Coffee and Talk ‘N Text clash in Saturday’s Philippine Cup matchup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, it won’t just be a battle between powerhouse teams with undefeated records early in the tournament.
Fans will also witness the renewal of the coaching rivalry between the Mixers’ Tim Cone and the Tropang Texters’ Norman Black, two of the three most decorated coaches in PBA history when it comes to championships
“It’s neat that Norman is back in the PBA and I’m honored to be coaching against him again,” said Cone, who has won 14 PBA titles, trailing the legendary Baby Dalupan by just one championship. Black, meanwhile, has 10 PBA crowns.
Cone and Black are also two of only four coaches to lead their teams to a coveted Grand Slam, with the others being Dalupan and Tommy Manotoc. Cone led Alaska to the triple crown in 1996, while Black achieved the feat with the San Miguel Beermen in 1989.
The two men have been coaching since the 1980s — Black debuted on the sidelines with Magnolia in 1985, while Cone started calling the shots for Alaska in 1989. But Black has spent the last decade out of a head coaching gig, spending the past decades building a championship program at Ateneo.
“We’ve had some great battles in the past and I’m sure this one and future ones will be the same. He has a great and experienced core of players to work with and they seem very comfortable playing under his reigns,” said Cone.
