World Cup of Pool: Orcollo-Corteza bows out September 06, 2012
MANILA, Philippines – Dennis Orcollo and Lee Van Corteza of Philippines-A yielded to unranked Switzerland, 7-8, Wednesday night in Day 2 of the 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool before a stunned crowd at the jampacked Robinson’s Ermita Midtown Activity Center Manila.
It looked like Orcollo and Corteza were on their way to an easy win after leading, 6-2, but two costly misses by Corteza in the next two racks got the Swiss pair on track.
“Dry break led to our loss,” said Orcollo.
“No ball dropped though I gave all in the break,” echoed the 33-year-old Corteza.
Orcollo almost pulled off a four-nine combination that would’ve pushed the Philippines in the next round but the nine ball was hit thick as it missed the corner pocket and instead Switzerland’s Dimitri Jungo and Fil-Swiss Ronni Regli, whose mother is a Samar native, made it a hill-hill battle.
Switzerland followed it up with a break and runout in the deciding rack.
Meanwhile, Finland overcame a poor start to beat Korea, 8-6.
Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen trailed Ryu Seung Woo and Lee Wan Su, 0-4, before Finland found its rhythm after chalking up three straight racks highlighted by a two-nine combination by Immonen.
Also, Chinese Taipei sweated out an 8-6, win over Malaysia.

Top pick June Mar Fajardo has potential to be dominant, says Eala
September 06, 2012
2 0
Top overall pick June Mar Fajardo has been strutting his wares in Petron Blaze Boosters practice, and his performance has led San Miguel Corporation executive Noli Eala to believe the 6-foot-10 slotman could become a true force in the PBA.
“If June Mar will realize what he has, he could be a dominant player,” Eala told InterAKTV. “It’s rare to find someone who has the size and strength, and June Mar has both of these.”
Eala said Petron’s Dorian Pena has been showing Fajardo the ropes during Petron’s preseason training, and the veteran center likes what he sees in the youngster.
“Dorian told me that there are only few people [in the PBA] who play strong — him, Ali Peek, and Jondan Salvador. Dorian had a difficult time pushing June Mar because he was so strong, he’s agile, and has skills. It’s rare to find a big man who has a complete package in his game,” said Eala.
Fajardo, a former University of Cebu star, spent the past year in the ASEAN Basketball League for the San Miguel Beermen, which is owned by the same conglomerate that bankrolls the Boosters.
He is expected to play a key role for Petron, with veteran frontliners Pena and Danny Ildefonso getting up in age and the team trading away frontliners Rob Reyes and Noy Baclao in the offseason.

ABL’s Beermen emerge as strong suitors for Meralco free agent Taulava September 06, 2012
The San Miguel Beermen of the ASEAN Basketball League has emerged as strong suitors for the services of veteran center Asi Taulava, whose contract with Meralco expired this past weekend.
Taulava’s agent Sheryl Reyes confirmed the interest of the San Miguel Corporation squad in the free agent, who turned down a two-year offer from the Bolts.
Earlier, Reyes told InterAKTV that Taulava has also gotten feelers from Barako Bull as well as squads in the ABL and the Chinese Basketball Association.
According to the agent, playing for the Beermen in the ABL holds an appeal for Taulava because of the schedule. ABL squads only play games once a week, although travel is involved in the league’s home-and-away format.
If successful, signing Taulava, the 2003 PBA Most Valuable Player, could be a major coup for the Beermen. Earlier, another former PBA MVP, Eric Menk, signed on to be part of the San Miguel squad after a Philippine Cup tour of duty with Ginebra, which is also owned by SMC.
Incidentally, it was Reyes who helped negotiate Menk’s latest pact with the conglomerate.

Power shortage for Meralco Bolts as Asi declines offer By Gerry Ramos
MERALCO just suffered a power shortage after veteran big man Asi Taulava declined the two-year contract extension offered to him by the franchise on Tuesday night.
Sheryl Reyes, the agent of the 2003 PBA MVP, made the announcement through the microblogging site Twitter. On her account@Female AgentSR, she tweeted: “We have officially declined Meralco offer for Asi. We would like to thank MVP Group for everything they have given him.”
The announcement just came hours after Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio sounded optimistic about the 6-foot-9 Fil-Tongan's return to the Bolts for the 38th season of the league starting on September 30.
Taulava appeared in Meralco’s practice game against Barako Bull Tuesday morning at the Meralco gym. He didn’t suit up, but sat on the team bench and cheered the Bolts, who won the match, 103-98, despite the lack of an intimidating presence inside.
“With Asi taking a rest, obviously, we struggled inside. He left a vacuum in the paint. But we’re excited because Asi already made a verbal commitment to play for us again this season,” Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio told Spin.ph shortly after the game.
Reyes however, was quick to refute that Taulava’s presence in the tune-up game doesn’t mean he has committed to signing the contract extension with the Bolts.
“Asi was there in the tune-up game to simply support Sol Mercado, but we’re still studying the options and looking at the details of the contract offered to Asi,” Reyes said.
By evening, Taulava made known his intention of not returning back to his team of the last two years.
“Thank you to all the Meralco fans of Asi for the past years we appreciate the support, keep supporting him in his next career path," Reyes tweeted.
“We will soon announce Asi's next career move ... Join us in our new journey,” Reyes tweeted.
According to the lady agent, Taulava’s other options outside Meralco include offers from three Asean Basketball League teams as well as from a club team in China’s pro league, Chinese Basketball Association.
This developed as Jay-R Reyes and rookie Clifford Hodge officially signed with the team Tuesday.

Ref's decision is final...sometimes
By Butch Maniego
September 05, 2012, 07:22 pm
USED to be that in the old days, whatever call an umpire, linesman, judge, arbiter or referee made in a game or match was final, conclusive and resolute. Now, technology has made it so that teams and players can challenge an unfavorable call or decision and possibly get immediate redress before the game proceeds.
I’m not 100% certain but I believe it was the National Football League in the US was at the forefront of the change, embracing the fact that as time went by, their covering networks used more and more cameras (what I read was 18 for regular season games and up to double that for the Super Bowl) which meant more review and replay angles to look at which would uphold the refs’ decision.
So what the NFL did was put in a review official, who was part of the game’s officiating crew and gave each team the right to challenge on-field calls at the penalty of a timeout if the referee was proven to be right. Of course, if the call was wrong, the timeout was given back.
In tennis, used to be that the only one who can correct an erring linesman was the chair umpire, who could reverse a wrong call faster than any John McEnroe tantrum. Recently, especially in the major (read: televised) events, each player at the beginning of each set was given three Hawkeye challenges in which players can ask that the call of the officials be reviewed by a machine that shows where a ball lands.
A few years ago while working in the PBL, then commissioner Chino Trinidad made the bold move to use replay angles as a tool to get the call right in all of the league’s televised games. Among these were the automatic review of all three-point shots, buzzer-beaters, goal-tending calls and in the final two minutes, even out-of-bound plays that were too close to call.
The philosophy behind all these is that leagues and tournaments have embraced the availability of new tools that can help make sure that proper decisions are arrived at and that less mistakes are made, especially when the stakes are so high – like Grand Slam events and championships.
But then again there are holdouts – baseball is one (a plate umpire can go to the first or third base umpire to check if a bat had indeed gone around for a possible strike call but that’s all) but as far as replays are concerned, they’re a no-no for making calls. If a ball is hit on fair or foul territory, or whether a ball had indeed cleared the fence or not, it’s the umpire’s call to make and if he blows it, he answers to his superiors and faces sanctions – but the call stays.
Or in boxing, such as the case when Manny Pacquiao lost via inept judging to Timothy Bradley during his last fight, even though nearly every armchair judge and expert scored it as a win for the Pacman, the sanctioning boxing association and the sports’ state commission could not do anything about it. It was the wrong decision, but Bradley keeps the belt anyway, and the worst thing that would happen to the judges is for them to no longer be hired by the WBO or given the green light to work a match by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Why do I suddenly mention referees’ decisions? Over the weekend, controversy erupted in the UAAP after NU filed a protest claiming that the game-winning basket made by FEU’s RR Garcia during their second-round meeting was not made in time. Buzzer-beater decision – although officials are trained to go through the process – consulting the timer and if a video replay review is allowed, to look at that.
Now I’m sure that in all the amount of time it took to affirm the made basket, the referees were checking the replays available with coach Ato Badolato, who is currently the league’s commissioner. And if Badolato already gave his blessings for the referee to count the basket, how can NU hope to get redress of their plight from the same person?
Anyway, back to the NCAA – just when everyone (including myself) was starting to look at the Heavy Bombers as a legit contender and waiting for UPHSD to blow up, the Altas took the measure of JRU in Monday’s game, tied their victim for third and coupled with San Sebastian’s win, gave the Stags some breathing room for the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
Also saddened by UPHSD’s win? Letran and Mapua, the teams immediately below them in the standings who were hoping the Bombers could help them by beating Aric del Rosario’s boys. But with Jett-sanity Jett Vidal playing the way he has (career-high 32 points and trending on Twitter), it was not meant to be.

Unenergized Barako Bull missing Miller
BARAKO Bull head coach Junel Baculi admitted his team is far from competitive form following a 103-98 loss to Meralco in a tune-up game between the two teams Wednesday at the Meralco gym.
Baculi noted his big men, especially Doug Kramer and new acquisition Enrico Villanueva, botched several attempts under the basket.
The 6-foot-5 Villanueva, recently acquired from Ginebra in a trade, showed flashes of brilliance in the early stretch of the third period, but more often failed to get back quick enough on defense.
Kramer meantime, settled for jumpers even though Meralco didn’t have veteran center Asi Taulava’s intimidating presence inside.
“We really need to work on our stamina. Kitang-kita naman sa laro na hirap na kami sa dulo,” said Baculi, whose team obviously is still in search of a two-guard scorer to compensate for the loss of two-time MVP Willie Miller in the trade that paved the way for Villanueva's return to Barako Bull.
While the Energy had veterans Ronald Tubid and Sunday Salvacion as well as recently acquired Roger Yap to rotate on the two spot, Baculi admitted the three players are not in the same mold as the prolific 35-year-old Miller.
“Not to demean their talent, pero siyempre, iba talaga yung nagagawa ni Miller sa offense. Hopefully, management can come up with a good trade move in the coming days para ma-compensate namin yung pagkawala ni Willie. Kasi sa front court, wala na naman kaming problema dahil nandiyan na si Rico to help Doug,” added Baculi.
Barako posted an overall win-loss record of 18-24 this past season. The Energy placed eighth overall during the Philippine Cup, but managed to make it to the semifinals of Commissioner’s Cup, where they stretched Talk ‘N Text to a deciding Game Seven in the semifinals.

Lassiter twists knee, joins Lutz, Pena on Petron injury list
Rey Joble, InterAKTV
The offseason has not augured well for the Boosters so far, with Marcio Lassiter suffering another injury to join Chris Lutz and Dorian Pena in Petron’s list of walking wounded.
“He just twisted his knee,” San Miguel Corporation executive Noli Eala said about Lassiter’s latest setback. The second-year forward has yet to play a single game for the Boosters, missing all of the Governors’ Cup after being traded to the team after breaking his hand.
“I hope it’s not serious,” added Eala.
Lutz, who also battled injuries in his first year in the PBA last season, is again in sick bay, as is Pena. It hasn’t been the best of starts for new head coach Olsen Racela at the helm of Petron, which traded another key player Dondon Hontiveros last week.
“We lost an important player because of a trade in the first week. Three more down because of injuries this week. Not exactly the kind of start we want,” posted Racela on his Twitter account.
“First practice game vs Rain or Shine tomorrow. Dorian, Chris and Marcio will not play because of various injuries. Hopefully they’ll be ready in time for the opening.”

Trillanes resolution hails 'valiant effort' of Jones Cup champions
SENATOR Antonio Trillanes has sponsored a resolution commending Smart-Gilas Pilipinas 2.0 for winning the country's first William Jones Cup title in 14 years.
In Senate Resolution No. 8555, Trillanes praised the "valiant effort" of the Chot Reyes-coached Gilas team which defeated the United States, 76-75, to cap the country's fourth successful championship run in the Taipei tournament and the first since the victory of the Philippine Centennial team in 1998.
The resolution said “the valiant effort shown by the Philippine team in securing the victory is seen as a meaningful and redeeming win as it marks the resurgence of Philippine basketball and reclaims the country’s stature as a dominant force in Asian basketball.”
Trillanes said Smart-Gilas’ coaching staff, officials and players deserve the nation’s congratulation and the Senate’s commendation.
Gilas is made up of Enrico Villanueva (Barangay Ginebra), Gabe Norwood (Rain or Shine), Gary David (Powerade), Jeff Chan (Rain or Shine), LA Tenorio (then with Alaska and now with Ginebra) Larry fonacier (Talk N’ Text), Mac Baracael (Alaska), Ranidel De Ocampo (Talk N’ Text), Sol Mercado (Meralco) and Sonny Thoss (Alaska), naturalized player Marcus Douthit, Matt Rosser and San Beda’s Garvo Lanete.

Asi committed to stay, says Bolts' Gregorio
JUDGING from Meralco’s struggle in the paint in a practice game against a bigger and bulkier Barako Bull, the Bolts definitely need veteran Asi Taulava and his 6-foot-9, 245-pound frame if they hope to come up with a stronger showing in the PBA season kicking off on September 30.
Taulava, still without a contract, showed up in street clothes on Wednesday for the pro league’s very first preseason game the Bolts won, 103-98 over the Energy Boosters at the Meralco gym in Pasig City. He spent the game sitting next to new Bolts manager Butch Antonio.
Without Taulava’s imposing presence in the middle, the Energy Boosters easily gobbled up the Bolts’ early 16-point cushion to take a 75-70 lead entering the final period.
The Bolts, though, rode on the high-scoring trio of Mac-mac Cardona, Fil-Am rookie swingman Cliff Hodge and Sol Mercado in the final period to beat a still out-of-shape Barako Bull squad.
“With Asi taking a rest, obviously, we struggled inside. He left a vacuum in the paint. But we’re excited because Asi already made a verbal commitment to play for us again this season,” Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio told Spin.ph shortly after the game.
Antonio had earlier said that management already offered Taulava a two-year contract extension, which the 14-year PBA veteran did not immediately sign as he weighs his options.
Taulava’s lady agent, Sheryl Reyes, said Taulava’s presence in the tune-up game doesn’t mean he has committed to signing the contract extension with the Bolts.
“Asi was there in the tune-up game to simply support Sol Mercado, but we’re still studying the options and looking at the details of the contract offered to Asi,” Reyes said.
According to Reyes, Taulava’s other options outside Meralco include offers from three Asean Basketball League teams as well as from a club team in China’s pro league, Chinese Basketball Association.
But based on what Gregorio said, it appears that it will only be a matter of time before Taulava wears the orange-and-white uniform of the Bolts again.
