VIDEO: KIEFER RAVENA GETS DISRESPECTFUL

Kiefer Ravena, by all accounts, is a good kid. He hasn’t let the hype get to his head, he works hard and almost never showboats. However, they say all great players have a mean streak in them. And just in case you thought Kiefer didn’t have one, he let it out in their last game against UST. Cover the kids’ eyes and ears. This is rated SPG.
Ugh. Why you gotta get mean like that, Kief?

FIBA Asia Cup: Philippines routs Macau to improve to 3-1

September 17, 2012 11:57am
The Philippines exploded for 14 straight points to start the game, and never let Macau taste the lead, as they romped to a 98-46 win, Monday in the FIBA Asia Cup, held in Tokyo, Japan.

The victory gave the Philippines a 3-1 record in the preliminary round, headed into the win-or-go-home final round.

Ranidel de Ocampo opened the scoring festivities for the Philippines, followed by a basket and a free throw courtesy of Matt Rosser, as Gilas went up 5-0 early. But the real highlight was Jeff Chan, who picked up where he left off versus Uzbekistan, dropping 13 markers to give his side a 33-14 lead after the first quarter.

Macau played much better in the second period, getting the lead down to 13, 45-32, with 2:42 remaining in the first half on a basket by Fu In Lao. In response, the Philippines countered with a 10-1 run prior to halftime, to make their advantage 22 points, 55-33 entering the break.

In the third, the Philippines showed no signs of letting up. Sonny Thoss made it a 30-point game with 6:06 remaining, and then Jeff Chan ballooned that to 40-points, 79-39, at the 1:44 mark. All in all, Macau scored just eight points in the third, versus 28 from Gilas, to make it 83-41.

The fourth quarter was more of the same. Enrico Villanueva split charities that made it a 50-point game, 96-46, with 3:18 left. Macau simply failed to score from the 6:55 mark of the fourth quarter onwards, while the Philippine reserves closed out the game in style.

The Philippines managed to go the entire game without fielding naturalized center Marcus Douthit. The 6'10" center got an extra day of rest, as the rest of his teammates took care of business easily. - AMD, GMA News

Last hurrah for 'Major Pain' By Richard Dy

If he can't crash Ginebra's lineup this season, former league MVP Eric Menk says he would be happy to team up with Asi Taulava again with the San Miguel Beermen in the ABL. Jerome Ascano
DOZENS of fans gathered around Eric Menk at the end of Ginebra's preseason match against Alaska on Saturday at the Reyes Gym, showing how thrilled they were to see the veteran center strotting on court once again in a Kings' jersey even for just a fleeting moment.

Chances of Menk playing for Ginebra when the season starts remains dim, though.

Barely two days after coming back from a five-week vacation with his family in Michigan, the 6-5 Fil-American was pleasantly surprised when Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen called his name and asked him to play in the final five minutes of the first half against the Aces.

Menk made no field goal attempts and grabbed a solitary rebound, but was thrilled to simply be back on court.

"I wasn't really expecting to get in the game since I just had my first practice with the team yesterday (Friday). But it's really nice to be back," Menk told Spin.ph.

The former league MVP signed a fresh extension with the Kings prior to coming over and he said he kept himself in top shape during his vacation by lifting weights and running four times a week.

However, there are no guarantees that he will be able to make the regular lineup this season in a team that has suddenly become deep in the frontline with rookies Chris Ellis and Keith Jensen joining Kerby Raymundo, Billy Mamaril and Rudy Hatfield, who like Menk played his first preseason game on Saturday.

Ginebra management, in fact, has bared that Menk's most likely destination will be the Asean Basketball League with the San Miguel Beermen.

Menk, though, is preparing himself for the season, regardless of where he ends up.

A stint with the Beermen in the ABL may even be good, he said, since it would reunite him with good friend Asi Taulava, who recently snubbed a two-year maximum offer by Meralco in favor of a three-year deal with the SMC club.

Menk and Taulava played together in two national teams.

"It would really be fun playing again with Asi. He's such a great player. He takes a lot of pressure off my shoulder when we played in the national team back in 2002 and 2007,"  said 'Major Pain.'

Retirement is also in Menk's mind, but if he has his way it won't happen this year. The 38-year-old said he plans to play one more season at the end of his current contract before calling it a career.

No sweat as Gilas advances in Fiba Asia Cup Gerry Ramos

Jeff Chan led all scorers for Smart Gilas Pilipinas 2.0 in the match against Uzbekistan with 20 points. Fibaasia.net
SMART Gilas-Pilipinas 2.0 booked a seat in the crossover, knockout stage of the Fiba Asia Cup after routing Uzbekistan , 85-50,  Sunday at the Ota gym in Tokyo, Japan.
It was the second straight win for the Nationals (2-1) after an opening day loss to China as they clinch one of four quarterfinal seats up for grabs in Group A.
They cap their preliminary round campaign by taking on winless Macau on Monday.
“I am really proud of the way the team has reacted so far,” said coach Chot Reyes of the Nationals, who led by as many as 83-46 in the final three minutes of the game on a slam by Fil-Am rookie Matt Rosser.
Jeff Chan had 20 points to lead the Nationals, all of whom were given enough playing minutes by Reyes including Rosser, who had eight points and 11 rebounds.
"Easy game today, much needed rest," said Marcus Douthit on his Twitter account.
The Nationals broke the game open behind a 17-0 run in the second period to stretch a tight four-point lead to 37-16 just before the half.
“I think we did well to stop them (Uzbeks). These are games we need to put away like this,” added Reyes.
Uzbekistan was led by the 16 of Vyacheslav Denisov, while Samender Juginisov had a double-double of 12 and 10 rebounds.

Ravena's highlight dunk over Abdul draws raves By Reuben Terrado

Ateneo star Kiefer Ravena says he didn't know UST slotman Karim Abdul would challenge his dunk. Jerome Ascano
ONE day later, the dunk is still being talked about in league circles and on social media sites.
It happened like this.
With Ateneo on the break after a University of Santo Tomas turnover, Ravena cut loose for a fastbreak, unaware that Tigers' big man Karim Abdul was in hot pursuit just a step or two behind him and determined to stop him.
The UAAP's most famous player finished the dunk with full force that there was nothing Abdul could do to stop it, the King Eagle letting out a roar as the Ateneo crowd at the MOA Arena went wild.
“Highlight of my career,” Ravena jokingly said, drawing a smile from his coach in Norman Black during the postgame interview on Saturday after the win over the Tigers.
Whether it was in jest or not, Ravena’s highlight play has drawn raves on social media.
Here's the link.
Among those who were left in awe was Talk ‘N Text cager Jimmy Alapag, who watched the Ateneo-UST game together with businessman Manny V. Pangilinan.
“Hope they got a nice pic of @kieferravena last dunk! That was nasty! #SlamofdaMonth,” Alapag tweeted on this Twitter account @JAlapag3.
Former Blue Eagle Jai Reyes said on his Twitter account: “Dunk of the year!! @kieferravena (expletive) dunk yan”
To date, videos of the dunk have attracted more than 8,000 views on YouTube.
Ravena said that he was dead-set on dunking the ball to give the Eagles a much-needed spark after they trailed for most of the first half.
He also didn't want to get a tongue-lashing from Black, who has always encouraged his star player to finish strong.
“I wanted to dunk it,” Ravena said. “Kapag sa practice, pinapagalitan ako ni coach Norman (Black) kapag minimintis ko. We were playing kind of low and intensity-wise, gusto ko ipakita ‘yung intensity.”
The player who goes by the monicker ‘The Phenom’ said that he never had a clue that Abdul was on his way to challenging the dunk.
“I took it strong and met him upstairs. Nagulat ako na sumabay si Karim,” Ravena said.

Gilas gunners at last find range, but Reyes can't be too happy By the staff

After going a combined 8-for-48 from three-point range in games against China ‘B’ and Lebanon, Gilas made eight of 20 shots from beyond the arc against the Uzbeks. Fibaasia.net
SMART Gilas Pilipinas 2.0 coach Chot Reyes tried his best to win the game against Uzbekistan without unleashing his full offensive arsenal on Sunday night.
However, there was no hiding the damage his shooters can do when they get into rhythm.
A Gilas team that couldn’t seem to shoot straight in its first two games in the Fiba Asia Cup in Tokyo was finally on target against lowly Uzbekistan on the way to a runaway 85-50 victory.
After going a combined 8-for-48 from three-point range in games against China ‘B’ and Lebanon, the Nationals made eight of 20 shots from beyond the arc against the Uzbeks and hit 46 percent of their shots from the perimeter.
Under normal circumstances, that should be very good news for Reyes, except that he had gone into the game determined to pull his punches and keep scouts from other teams guessing.
“We wanted to keep something from the scouts (of the other teams),” Reyes admitted after the game.  “We played defense the way we wanted, but we held something back offensively.”
But there was no holding back Jeff Chan, who, after going just 1-for-11 from three-point distance in the first two games, made three right in the first half and finished with a team-high 20 points.
Jared Dillinger’s guns also can’t be muzzled as he scored 10 points off the bench. Even Matt Ganuelas got into the act, providing the night’s highlight plays with a two-handed slam and a fancy layup.
Reyes, at least, won’t have any complaints with the Gilas defense, which held the Uzbeks to the lowest output by any team in the tournament so far.
There was more good news for Gilas, which is now 2-1 and headed for the knockout stage.
The breezy win over Uzbekistan meant much-needed rest for naturalized player Marcus Douthit, a workhorse who had to carry the team on his shoulders in the 78-68 win over Lebanon a day earlier.
After scoring 25 points and pulling down 21 rebounds against the Lebanese, Douthit played just 14 minutes and scored nine points on Sunday.
Douthit figures to have more rest when Gilas plays minnow Macau at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, which should come in handy since Reyes needs him fresh and fit for the knockout rounds.
