19th PBA Press Corps Awards Sept. 10

The Philippine Basketball Association Press Corps, an organization made up of reporters from all publications covering the pro league beat, will hold its 19th Annual Awards on Monday, Sept. 10, at the Kamayan EDSA.

Highlight of the progran will be the awarding of the Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year citations, trophies named after PBA luminaries Virgilio 'Baby" Dalupan and the late Crispa bossman Danny Floro, respectively.

The group will also hand out for the first time the 'Scoring Champ' award, which will be given to defunct Powerade gunslinger Gary David for his outstanding offensive season that made him an MVP contender and member of the Smart Gilas-Pilipinas program.

The affair starts at 7pm and PBA Press Corps president Musong R. Castillo of the Inquirer is calling on all past presidents, members and PBA personalities to attend.

A number of other awards are also up for grabs, like the Defensive Player of the Year, the Comeback Player of the Year and the Mr. uality Minutes trophy which several superstars of yesteryears have won before.

Marcio Lassiter of Petron Blaze, JV Casio of Powerade, now Global Port, James Sena of Air21 and Dylan Ababou of Barangay Ginebra, will join Rain or Shine's Paul Lee in the All-Rookie team.

Lee was the hands-down winner of the Rookie of the Year award.

The PBA Press Corps started giving out these awards in 1993 to recognize outstanding talents, doing so annually except in 2004 when the PBA went on a transition season to hold just two conferences in a year.

SITTING TOO LONG CAN KILL YOU

Need motivation to get up from your desk? A new published this study led by the University of Sydney has found that too much sitting can shorten your life.

In the study, adults who sat 11 or more hours per day had a 40 percent increased risk of dying in the next three years compared with those who sat for fewer than four hours a day.

Researchers took into account their physical activity, weight, and health status. The study of more than 200,000 people is published today in Archives of Internal Medicine.

"These results have important public health implications," said study lead author Dr. Hidde van der Ploeg, a senior research fellow at the University of Sydney's School of Public Health.

"That morning walk or trip to the gym is still necessary, but it's also important to avoid prolonged sitting. Our results suggest the time people spend sitting at home, at work and in traffic should be reduced by standing or walking more," he said.

The new study adds to growing scientific research suggesting that sitting can raise your risks for a host of problems, including obesity and diabetes -- this is especially true if you spend time outside of work in front of the TV or in your car. In one study, researchers found that people who spend more than two hours per day of leisure time watching television or sitting in front of a screen face double the risk of heart disease.

If you're deskbound by day, try moving as much as possible during office hours. Stand up when taking phone calls, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and walking to see a colleague rather than emailing. Take micro-breaks every 20 to 30 minutes: Get up, move around, or at least move your shoulders and take deep breaths to relieve muscle tension.

RA 10172 Clerical Error Law in NSO

President Benigno  Aquino III had signed the new law extending the power of local civil registrars to correct errors in birth certificates without any court order. Correcting errors in date of birth and gender in birth certificates no longer needs court approval.

Republic Act 10172, which was signed by the President last Aug. 19, amended several provisions of Republic Act 9048.

It extended the coverage of exemptions to requirement of judicial approval for correction on entries in the birth certificate.

Under the new law, the city or municipal registrar may correct clerical or typographical errors in the day and month of date of birth or gender without a court order.

The previous law did not include the entries on date of birth and gender among the exemptions on court approval requirement and only specified entries on first name and nickname in the civil register.

Apart from this, the new law also specified where the fees for corrections in the birth certificate should go.

“The fees collected by the city or municipal civil registrar or consul general pursuant to this Act shall accrue to the funds of the Local Civil Registry Office concerned or the Office of the Consul General for modernization of the office and hiring of new personnel and procurement of supplies, subject to government accounting and auditing rules,” read Section 8 of RA 10172.

The new law is a consolidation of Senate Bill 3113 and House Bill 4530 that Congress passed last May 30 and June 5, respectively.

NU places loss to FEU on Garcia buzzer-beater under protest

National University has put its 77-75 loss to Far Eastern University under protest on Sunday, contending that RR Garcia’s marginal basket for the Tamaraws should not have been counted.

NU athletic director Junel Baculi relayed the news to InterAKTV. The Bulldogs are contending that Garcia’s shot was still on the tips of his fingers when the buzzer sounded.

Baculi said that the Bulldogs will leave it up to UAAP commissioner Ato Badolato to decide on the matter.

Garcia’s shot capped a mad ending to the FEU-NU game. The former UAAP Most Valuable Player lost the ball on the final play, but NU’s Bobby Ray Parks also couldn’t gain a clear handle, allowing FEU’s Roger Pogoy to come up with the leather. Pogoy made a pass leading to Garcia’s final shot.

Maliksi, Baguio, Yeo high on Barako Bull trade wish list

Barako Bull lost its second leading local scorer and crunch time closer when it traded Willie Miller as part of a monster five-team deal completed last Friday.

Coach Junel Baculi makes it no secret that his team are looking at trade options to fill Miller’s big shoes.

Barako Bull coaching staff has crafted a wish list composed of high-flying, talented wingmen: Allein Maliksi of Ginebra San Miguel, Cyrus Baguio of Alaska and Joseph Yeo of Petron Blaze.

“Hindi naman masama mag-wish di ba? Wish list lang naman yan so we have included these names on our list,” Baculi told InterAKTV in a telephone interview.

Of the three, acquiring Baguio appears to be a long shot.

“Malamang hindi bitawan ng Alaska yan,” said Baculi.

The other two players, however, could be available with the right offer.

Maliksi, who began his career with Barako Bull last season, plays the No. 3 spot for Ginebra, sharing the same position with Dylan Ababou, Elmer Espiritu, and Filipino-American rookie Chris Ellis.

Yeo, on the other hand, is part of a congested swing rotation for Petron, which also includes former SMART-Gilas Pilipinas standouts Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter, rookie Alex Mallari, Joseph Yeo, and Wesley Gonzales.

Baculi said he will leave the wheeling and dealing of players to Barako Bull management.

“We’ve already told them what we need. We need someone who can replace Miller because he’s a big part of our squad. We need a closer and a scoring big guard,” he said.
