PBA commissioner Chito Salud insisted an import's wrongdoing won't be enough to ruin San Miguel Corp.'s "solid and unshakable" reputation but remained mum on the company's move to "re-evaluate" its participation in the pro league in the wake of the Renaldo Balkman controversy.
Just hours after Salud handed a life ban on Balkman for his attack on game officials and teammates, San Miguel released a statement saying it is re-evaluating its participation in the league due to "the possible long-term effect of the (Balkman) incident to the San Miguel organization's image."
Salud, however, said in a separate statement he doesn't believe the "individual and singular act" of an import can dent the SMC organization's "solid and unshakable" reputation.
"Petron/SMC franchise's reputation is solid and unshakable. I respectfully disagree with anyone who will say otherwise, much more on the basis of an import's individual and singular act," said Salud. "It just isn't the case."
The PBA chief, however, declined to comment on fears the "re-evaluation" was a threat to pull out the three teams under the SMC umbrella - San Mig, Barangay Ginebra, and Petron - from Asia's pioneering pro league.
He instead paid tribute to the SMC group and the people running it, most of whom were close to his late father - former PBA commissioner Rudy Salud.
"The SMC group is a great franchise run by great leaders. I know many of them personally and I only have great respect for them. Mr. (Danding) Cojuangco and Mr. (Ramon) Ang are pillars of Philippine society who I have followed and admired ever since," he said.
"The PBA and (SMC's) franchise have been together for a long, long time and that's valuable in every respect."

SMC to 're-evaluate' teams' participation in PBA in wake of Balkman drama By Gerry Ramos

ITS corporate image obviously affected by the series of incidents that led to the lifetime ban on Petron import Renaldo Balkman from the PBA, San Miguel Corp. stated on Monday it will "re-evaluate" its position as the only remaining original member of Asia’s pioneering pro league.
In a statement, the organization said it accepted the decision imposed by the league on the 6-foot-6 Balkman for the unsportsmanlike conduct he showed in Petron’s Commissioner’s Cup game against Alaska last week.
But while the company doesn’t condone the action of the eccentric import, the organization admitted the "incident has been blown out of proportion, and has damaged our good name."
“As such given the possible long-term effect of this incident to the San Miguel organization’s image, and in consideration of our need to preserve our good reputation, management has decided to re-evaluate the company's participation in the PBA,” part of the statement read.
The position of the corporation on the controversy came out following an emergency meeting involving SMC top management officials.
Asked if the statement meant the conglomerate is considering a pullout from the PBA of SMC teams San Mig Coffee, Barangay Ginebra, and Petron, a top Petron team official told Spin.ph, "just read between the lines."
SMC insisted the unfortunate incident has harmed the good name and reputation the company has nurtured through its long years of involvement not only in the league, but in Philippine sports in general.
“Our reputation is of utmost importance to us because we have worked hard to cultivate this good name through the decades. But it takes only one unfortunate incident like this to undo all our efforts,” the statement read.
The corporation, though, apologized to basketball fans and the PBA for the confusion caused by the unsportsmanlike conduct of the 28-year-old Balkman.
“We do not condone his actions,” it said of the former member of the Puerto Rican national team. “The mandate of our basketball operations has always been to entertain basketball fans and foster camaraderie and a spirit of healthy competition. We pride ourselves in having great teams which serve as good role models to the youth and community.”
In parting, SMC said, “Moving forward, we believe sports is a pillar of Philippine society and we will continue to support it and Filipino athletes in general in meaningful ways in and out of the PBA.”

Resurgent San Mig gets shot at unbeaten Aces By Richard Dy
Denzel Bowles hopes to play more consistently as the Mixers try to boost their bid for back-to-back titles. Jerome AscanoIT has been up and down for former Best Import awardee Denzel Bowles in three games since returning to the PBA, but he has vowed to steady himself and help San Mig Coffee in its bid for a back-to-back Commissioner’s Cup titles.
San Mig Coffee, 2-1 with Bowles, tries to get a confidence-boosting victory on Wednesday when it clashes with league-leading Alaska in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at 7:30 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Mixers have won their last two games since opening the conference with three straight losses. They look to extend the streak and become the first team to beat the Aces (5-0) this conference.
“I just want to play with the same intensity and try to grab every rebound and help the team win as much as possible,” said Bowles, last season’s Commissioner’s Cup best import.
The 6-foot-10 Bowles has come up with modest numbers in his first three games since replacing Matt Rogers — 19.6 points, 14.6 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.3 assists in 34 minutes of play.
Bowles fouled out minutes before the Mixers completed a 91-84 victory over the Globalport Batang Pier on Saturday in Naga City, Camarines Sur, finishing with just 18 points and seven boards.
He will be going up against a cat-quick Alaska import Robert Dozier, who may not be flashy but has fit well into the Aces’ triangle offense.
The 6’9” Dozier normed 22.2 points, 15.8 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and two assists in five games with the Aces, who are coming off a surprisingly easy 92-69 rout of Talk ’N Text last week.
Alaska coach Luigi Trillo believes the game against San Mig won’t be easy since the Aces are 0-2 to the Mixers during the Philippine Cup.
“San Mig has always given us fits, though they are not 100 percent yet,” said Trillo.
However, Trillo feels his wards are up to the task since they have proven this conference that they bring the best out of each other.
“I think some of these guys (Aces) are warriors too. And I think the nice thing is they bring the best out of each other,” he added.
Sonny Thoss is expected to also shadow Bowles, a role he has fully embraced this conference, which has somehow allowed Dozier to move more freely around the court.

Yap glad to see Mixers respond to pep talk By Richard Dy

James Yap’s biggest contribution to San Mig's breakthrough win in the PBA Commissioner's Cup on Sunday didn't show in the stats sheets. Neither was it seen on television.
Rather, it was the pep talk he gave his teammates in practice the day before the Talk 'N Text match.
The usually reserved San Mig star didn't play particularly well in the 90-82 win over the Texters on Sunday, but he was happy to see teammates heed his call and step up as the Mixers ended a string of three losses.
“Lahat naman kami professional eh. So at 0-3, talagang mapapaisip ka bakit ganoon. Sabi ko lang kailangan natin ng energy sa laro, at yun ang naipakita naman namin kanina sa game,” Yap told Spin.ph.
Yap finished with just six points for the Mixers, but Peter June Simon, Marc Pingris, Joe Devance put in double-digit outputs to fill up the scoring slack for the foul-plagued two-time MVP.
But no one heeded Yap's call more than import Denzel Bowles, who, after a lackluster debut in a lopsided loss to Rain or Shine just two days earlier, erupted for 29 points and 24 boards against the Texters.
“Sabi ko kanina sa kanya, huwag ka masyadong manggigil. Scan mo muna ang laro. Ganun naman kasi talaga, pag maraming nakatingin sa iyo, may tendency manggigil,” said Yap of Bowles.
"At least, sa laro ngayon, nandun ang focus niya."
While the Mixers 1-3 record is still far from the pace-setting Alaska Aces’ 4-0 slate, Yap said the victory against the Tropang Texters on Sunday is a step in the right direction.
“Kailangan talagang manalo eh. At least para kaming nabunutan na ng tinik after ng panalong ito,” he said.
