The San Miguel Beermen of the ASEAN Basketball League has emerged as strong suitors for the services of veteran center Asi Taulava, whose contract with Meralco expired this past weekend.
Taulava’s agent Sheryl Reyes confirmed the interest of the San Miguel Corporation squad in the free agent, who turned down a two-year offer from the Bolts.
Earlier, Reyes told InterAKTV that Taulava has also gotten feelers from Barako Bull as well as squads in the ABL and the Chinese Basketball Association.
According to the agent, playing for the Beermen in the ABL holds an appeal for Taulava because of the schedule. ABL squads only play games once a week, although travel is involved in the league’s home-and-away format.
If successful, signing Taulava, the 2003 PBA Most Valuable Player, could be a major coup for the Beermen. Earlier, another former PBA MVP, Eric Menk, signed on to be part of the San Miguel squad after a Philippine Cup tour of duty with Ginebra, which is also owned by SMC.
Incidentally, it was Reyes who helped negotiate Menk’s latest pact with the conglomerate.
